Grid Computing News : Hospital Goes Digital With Help From IBM Grid
Massachusetts-based HealthAlliance Hospital turned to IBM to make the most of its picture archiving and communication system (PACS). HealthAlliance Hospital, a member of UMass Memorial Health Care, installed a PACS from Siemens Medical Solutions so it can move toward digital health records while eliminating traditional paper and film. But making those digital records widely available took a little help from Big Blue. With IBM's Grid Medical Archive Solution (GMAS), the hospital can now make patient records available to clinicians anytime, anywhere. GMAS, a cross-IBM offering composed of storage, software, servers and services, gives hospitals, clinics, research institutions and pharmaceutical companies an automated and resilient enterprise storage archive for delivering medical images, patient records and other critical healthcare reference information on demand.... read more

Grid Computing News : A New Wave of Utility Computing Acquisitions
The ever increasing complexity of the enterprise data center is challenging IT managers to come up with creative ways to manage the data center and do so while keeping the costs down. Simultaneously, many executives worry that current inflexibility of the IT infrastructure actually hamstrings corporate business strategy. Product development, product launches, channel development and other activities get delayed or even abandoned due to the difficulty and cost of modifying today's information technology infrastructure.... read more

Grid Computing News : Why Utility Computing Will Succeed Where ASPs and Outsourcing Failed
In our last article (Will the Real Utility Computing Model Please Stand Up) we defined utility computing as the provision of IT-based functionality on demand. We argued that much of the marketing hype around utility computing misses the mark. IBM and other vendors hoping to benefit from the trend have done the concept a disservice by not being clear about their own definition and delivering very little in the way of working examples. As a consequence users are struggling to see the difference between utility computing and previous, failed attempts to reduce the cost and complexity of IT such as Application Service Providers (ASPs) and outsourcing. In todays article, we will explain why utility computing will succeed where the others failed.... read more

Grid Computing News : Will the Real Utility Computing Model Please Stand Up
To the potential user of utility computing, one thing is clear: the vendors of utility computing are as confused as the users are. A bewildering array of terms currently jostles for position. On demand computing, adaptive computing and agility computing are just some. More important still, there is a danger that the true business benefit of utility computing will be obscured beneath the mere technical. In this, the first in a series of articles by Leif Eriksen, searches out the business definition of utility computing.... read more

Grid Computing News : Platform Makes HPC Management Play
Platform Computing has acquired Scali's HPC cluster management and monitoring business. Platform said the acquisition of Scali Manage is the next step in realizing the company's vision of an integrated HPC infrastructure software solution. Cluster and grid computing use is on the rise, but integrating and managing such systems remains complex, Platform said. Platform Open Cluster Stack and Scali Manage are two products that have been designed to meet this challenge and improve performance and management and lower support costs for operating an HPC infrastructure. Platform said it will integrate components of Platform OCS and Scali Manage "into a best-of-breed product offering."
As part of the deal, Platform said it will retain all key sales, development and support personnel and will continue to sell, support and enhance Scali Manage.... read more

Grid Computing News : IBM Grid Speeds Cancer Research
Thanks to the IBM-sponsored World Community Grid , researchers will be able to complete decades of cancer research in a year or two. A research team composed of scientists from the Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI), Princess Margaret Hospital and University Health Network is the first from Canada to use the World Community Grid, a volunteer network of PCs and laptops that boasts as much power as any of the world's top five supercomputers. The team will use the grid to analyze the results of experiments on proteins using data collected by scientists at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. The analysis would take conventional computer systems 162 years to complete, according to IBM, but the grid will give researchers the power to complete the analysis in one or two years. The result will be a better understanding of how proteins function, which could lead to the development of more effective cancer-fighting drugs.... read more
Grid Computing News : Univa UD Launches Open Source Grid Community
Univa UD has re-launched its Grid.org Web site as an online community for open source grid and cluster users and developers. The site was where United Devices had housed its public grid computing projects before its merger with Univa. Now the site will get a second life as an open source grid and cluster community. Univa UD isn't the only company making grid computing news at this week's Supercomputing conference. The Open Grid Forum said its High Performance Computing Basic Profile specification will be adopted in product releases by several commercial providers, including Microsoft, Altair, and Platform Computing.... read more
Grid Computing News : IBM Brings Its 'Blue Cloud' to The Enterprise
IBM on Thursday announced "Blue Cloud," a combination of software and hardware components that will let enterprise customers experiment with the "cloud" computing model that's largely responsible for the growth and popularity of Web 2.0 heavyweights Google and Amazon.com. Dennis Quan, CTO of High Performance on Demand Solutions for IBM's software group, said Blue Cloud will be based on open standards and open-source software supported by IBM virtualization and datacenter management software. "I think this initiative gets to the point that we're solving our customers' pain points," Quan said in an interview with InternetNews.com . "The proliferation of content, particularly rich media like video, is contributing to the need for more compute power. Blue Cloud essentially takes this same cloud computing model to the enterprise, giving companies the ability to establish their own cloud computing architecture to handle the enormous data-processing power required for video, social-networking and other Web 2.0 technologies.... read more
Grid Computing News : Microsoft Takes An Interest In Gridbus
Microsoft and the Australian Research Council are funding work by the Gridbus Project on next-generation enterprise grids. Microsoft is contributing about $500,000 in cash and in-kind services to the .NET-based grid computing project, and the ARC is pitching in another $250,000. The Gridbus Project at the University of Melbourne is developing a .NET-based enterprise grid computing framework called Alchemi ( www.alchemi.net ) that simplifies the development and execution of applications in networked environments by aggregating the power of multiple desktop computers to form a virtual supercomputer that accelerates applications on the Windows platform. With help from ARC and Microsoft, the project, headed by Raj Buyya of the University of Melbourne, will further develop the .NET-based grid platform to allow rapid implementation of different parallel models and scheduling techniques. It also lacks the flexibility required for implementing various types of widely employed parallel models such as message passing and dataflows."
The project "will revolutionize the computing field by enhancing the productivity of software engineering for enterprise applications and accelerate their execution on enterprise grids," he said.... read more

Grid computing trends blog started
The topic of this blog is grid computing solutions.
Grid computing enables the virtualization of distributed data and computing resources (for example processing resources, network bandwidth and storage capacity) to create a single system.
Like an Internet user surfs a unified instance of content via the Web, a grid user essentially sees a large single virtual computer.
